Plasma Technology Overview

Plasma Treatment

The BARTEC Plasma Treatment system guarantees the highest process control for all plasma surface treatment processes. The BARTEC cold Plasma treatment systems are used for ultra-fine cleaning or activation of surfaces prior to bonding, injection molding, potting, printing or any other process that requires a clean surface and sufficient surface energy to create adhesion.

The BARTEC Plasma treatment systems provide the highest level of process control and provide real time feedback for all of the process parameters insuring a repeatable process with the same results every time. All BARTEC plasma treatment systems can be integrated into your production line.

The benefits of BARTEC plasma treatment systems include:
  • Increased adhesion
  • High process security
  • Long term and stable bond strength

What is Plasma?
Electrical Energy + Gas (air) = Plasma
  • - Fourth State of Matter
  • - Ionized Gas ("broken-up" gas atoms/molecules)
  • - 99% of the visible matter in the universe

Plasma consists of:
  • - Positively & negatively charged Ions
  • - (Excited) gas molecules
  • - Molecule fragments
  • - UV light

There is plasma in every

Northern lights are Plasma.

Lightning creates plasma by applying
electrical energy to air.

Typical Plasma Applications:
Plasma is suitable prior to all processes requiring good adhesion, such as:
  • Potting
  • Adhesive Bonding
  • Foaming
  • Sealing
  • Injection Molding
  • Coating
  • Printing
  • Painting

Plasma treatment removes the separating layer and improves
adhesion on injection molded parts before dispensing adhesive.

Potential-free plasma treatment of electronic
components and PCB before potting

Benefits of Plasma Pre-Treatment:
Easy adjustment and of:
  • Process stability
  • Cost-effective
  • Contact-free
  • Inline-compatible and space saving
  • Single-Step-Process

How does Plasma work?
Surface cleaning
Plasma surface cleaning works by blasting away, cracking, and volatilizeing organic contaminants
  • Ultra-fine cleaning
  • Removal of separating layer
  • Removal of particles
  • Removal of oxide layers

Surface activation
Plasma surface activation works by cracking the top molecular bindings of a material
  • Nm scale
  • Increasing the wettability
  • Increasing the surface energy (mN/m)
  • Increasing the polarity on a surface
  • Oxidation of surface

How is the Plasma treatment effect measured?
Methods for measuring surface energy (SE)
  • Nm scale
  • Test inks are used to measure surface energy (indicating mN/m values, stocked by BARTEC)
  • Contact angle measurement (drop shape analysis)

BARTEC is a manufacturer of Plasma technology equipment and machines for Plasma cleaning, plasma treatment for adhesion enhancement available from table top plasma treatment systems to fully automated high capacity plasma treatment work cells, single or multiple plasma treatment heads and in stationary or with 3 axis coordination configurations.

BARTEC plasma treatment systems allow for plasma cleaning and adhesion promotion of any surface.

BARTEC has two plasma treatment systems available for your plasma treatment application, the BARTEC Plasma Treatment System BPS300 and the BARTEC Plasma Treatment System BPS1000. BARTEC Plasma Treatment Systems are also available in vacuum plasma machines.
